Music expert spotlights When In Rome’s powerful new single

Music expert Diana Cavazos Woloszyk turned the spotlight on British synth-pop favourites When In Rome during her latest Single of the Week feature on the Ginger and Nuts Show, praising the band’s new release, Human Nature, as both timely and deeply relevant.

Introducing her selection, Diana reflected on the band’s enduring legacy, recalling how they first captured the hearts of music fans in 1988 with their iconic hit, The Promise.

“It’s one of my all-time favourite songs,” she said, noting that the track later found a whole new audience after being featured in the cult classic film Napoleon Dynamite.

For Diana, however, her admiration for the band extends far beyond nostalgia.

She shared how, while returning to radio in 2012, Clive Farrington was one of the very first artists she approached for an interview. What began as a professional connection eventually developed into a long-standing friendship with the band as she continued supporting their music and later met both Clive and Andrew Mann at several Chicago-area concerts.

“Every encounter confirmed what I already suspected,” Diana said. “They’re not only talented musicians, but genuinely kind, down-to-earth people who have always been gracious to their fans.”

Turning to the band’s latest release, Diana described Human Nature, which was released on July 10, as a thoughtful examination of the divisions that have become increasingly common in modern society.

Written by Clive, Andrew and Ryan Roth during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, the song explores why people become divided over political, religious and personal differences during periods of uncertainty and upheaval.

According to Diana, its message remains every bit as meaningful today as when it was first written.

Musically, she believes Human Nature delivers everything longtime When In Rome fans have come to expect while also embracing a fresh, contemporary sound.

Diana was particularly impressed by Clive’s vocal performance, describing his voice as being as strong as ever while retaining the signature style that helped define the band’s sound.

She also highlighted the song’s lush production, praising the female backing vocals for adding warmth, depth and texture throughout the track.

“The arrangement feels both nostalgic and modern,” she explained, adding that the balance between the band’s classic synth-pop roots and contemporary production makes the single especially compelling.

As a longtime supporter of the group, Diana said she particularly appreciated hearing how When In Rome has preserved its unmistakable identity while continuing to evolve musically.

She also pointed listeners towards the band’s forthcoming album, Illumination, which will include Human Nature alongside a cover of one of Clive’s favourite songs, The Captain of Her Heart, originally recorded by Swiss duo Double.

Summing up her review, Diana described Human Nature as a reminder of why When In Rome continues to resonate with audiences more than three decades after The Promise.

“It’s thoughtful, relevant, beautifully produced and, in my opinion, a definite hit,” she said.
