Experience the magic of Worzel Gummidge

Jon Pertwee and Una Stubbs return as Worzel Gummidge and Aunt Sally in Worzel Gummidge Down Under. Enjoy all 22 episodes now lovingly restored from the original 16mm film in the Complete Restored Edition Series One & Two.

Made by Southern Television, Worzel Gummidge was a huge success running from 1979-1981. Despite its popularity, the series was cancelled in 1981 when the Independent Broadcast Authority (no doubt a bunch of bozzy mcoo’s) terminated Southern Television’s franchise. The new franchise holders did not renew the show despite the Daily Star leading a huge press campaign.

In 1987, Jon Pertwee found backers in New Zealand and Worzel Gummidge Down Under was commissioned. The show was shot on location in New Zealand (although it has never been shown there) and ran for a further 2 seasons in the UK between 1987 and 1989, totalling 22 episodes.

Unveiling the Secrets of Worzel Gummidge Down Under

The first seven episodes of season one Down Under were scripts for a spin-off series in 1983 called Worzel Gummidge in Ireland. The series was never made, so the scripts were rewritten and set in New Zealand, with another three added.

There is an early credit in Worzel Gummidge Down Under to special effects artist Peter Jackson, Oscar-winning director of the Lord of the Rings movies. Well, I’ll be bumswizzled!

Synopsis: The series follows the adventures of the lovable, if bad-tempered, scarecrow Worzel Gummidge as he travels to New Zealand to pursue the love of his life, Aunt Sally, who has been sold to some New Zealand antique dealers.
