The BFG: A Whirlwind Adventure Through Dreamland!

Although “The BFG” was nominated for Best Children’s Programme (Entertainment/Drama) at the 1990 BAFTAS, it narrowly lost to “Maid Marian and Her Merry Men.” But hey, let’s not dwell on that because both shows were amazing in their own right!

Win a copy of the Big Friendly Giant MoviePremiering on ITV on Christmas Day in 1989, “The BFG” was brought to life by the talented team at Cosgrove Hall Films. These remarkable animators were also responsible for creating other beloved characters like Count Duckula, Chorlton and the Wheelies, and the iconic secret agent Dangermouse (also voiced by David Jason). Renowned critic Patrick Stoddart commended Cosgrove Hall Films, comparing their work to the legendary Disney classics. High praise indeed!

It’s mind-boggling to think that “The BFG” was created before the era of computer-based animation. The ethereal sky in the Giants’ alien-looking land was ingeniously crafted by using a fish tank, bleeding paint into it, and filming it with an overcranked 35mm camera. Who says you need fancy technology to create magic?

Author Roald Dahl drew inspiration for the character of Sophie from his 5-year-old granddaughter, Sophie, who later became a supermodel and author herself. When Cosgrove Hall Films designed Sophie, they took cues from the young Sophie Dahl, who often sported John Lennon glasses. And here’s a fun fact: David Jason, famous for his role as Del-Boy in “Only Fools and Horses,” named his daughter Sophie-Mae after the endearing character from the film. If he had a son, he would have named him Damien Trotter. Lovely jubbly!

Ready for a quick synopsis? As you follow Sophie’s journey as a lonely orphan who crosses paths with her twenty-five-foot-high prince, the Big Friendly Giant, prepare to be captivated. Together, they embark on a whirlwind adventure through the wonders of Dreamland. Equipped with his magical trumpet, the BFG’s mission is to harvest dreams and bring them to children while battling against the evil gargantuan grumps spreading fear and dread. With the help of Her Majesty the Queen, Sophie and the BFG deliver the most spectacular dreams imaginable.

So, don’t miss your chance to win a copy of “The Big Friendly Giant” on DVD or Blu-Ray.
