“Gather ye rosebuds while you may!” … and in this case, also your rose petals!

If you have roses growing in your garden and you would like to enjoy their petals during the winter months in homemade potpourri or use them as confetti for a wedding, then this is a great time to dry rose petals as it’s summer and they are in full bloom.

To make dried rose petals, you will need.

Rose petals
A basket or large bowl
Some newspaper or parchment
A warm, dark room
And some essential oil for scent (this is optional)

Harvesting your rose petals has to be done at just the right time.

Choose a dry, still day when the petals aren’t damp.

Select full blooms before they drop their petals, the correct time is when you can cup your hand around a bloom, gently squeeze it and it releases all of its petals onto your palm, if the rose resists, it’s not ready yet so leave it a little longer.

Drop the petals into a large bowl or basket and after you finish collecting them bring the petals inside and lay them out on sheets of newspaper on either a table or the floor in a room that is fairly dark, warm and dry.

Laying out the petals in a warm dark room dries them out quickly and also preserves their colour.

Drying them fully will take about a week to ten days.

Move the petals around from time to time until they feel dry and quite crisp.

They are ready when you can run your hands through them without sticking to your fingers.

Then, transfer the petals into paper bags to store them until required.

Adding a drop or two of rose essential oil, or whatever your favourite fragrance is, will provide a subtle perfume if you want to.

And if you choose to use them as wedding confetti, you can do so knowing that they are pretty, completely nature-friendly and biodegradable.

So there you go, a fun way to enjoy your roses for longer.
