The conversation was filled with heartfelt reflections on his love for country music, his songwriting process, and the joy of connecting with fans.

A Musical Legacy: Four Generations Deep

Rob shared how music has been a constant presence in his life, dating back generations. “I’ve got a very musical family, four generations deep on both sides. My grandfather was an entertainer, and even now, he still plays the banjo and ukulele,” Rob recounted. This upbringing in the working men’s clubs of Northern England—comparable to the honky-tonk scene in the U.S. — shaped his early musical tastes.

Rob’s early exposure to artists like Jim Reeves and Elvis from his grandfather, combined with his uncle’s band playing classic rock, sparked his own passion. “I fell in love with California rock and Laurel Canyon sounds,” he said, referencing influences like John Hiatt and the Eagles.

A Dream Come True: Landing in Nashville

When asked about his first trip to Nashville, Rob’s excitement was palpable. “For country musicians, Nashville is like Hollywood for aspiring actors. It’s this mecca you dream about,” he explained. But he didn’t want to experience it as just a tourist. Rob wanted to feel part of the scene, and with the help of his team, he did exactly that—spending months in Nashville collaborating with local musicians.

“It’s incredible to go from growing up on a council estate in Northern England to suddenly being in Nashville, playing gigs, working in studios, and feeling like I belong,” Rob marvelled. His time in Nashville transformed his approach to music, especially the joy of collaboration.

Collaborating: A New Chapter in Music Creation

Before Nashville, Rob worked alone, producing and writing everything himself. But the collaborative spirit of the city changed that. “I realised I could trust other people with my songs, and they got better because of it,” he admitted. His latest album, Leave Tomorrow, is a testament to this change, featuring a diverse array of contributions from seasoned Nashville musicians.

The singer also shared some dream collaborators, with Dolly Parton, Alison Krauss, and Brad Paisley topping the list. He expressed admiration for their songwriting skills and stage presence, along with a newer artist, Brennen Leigh, who he saw perform live in Nashville.

Challenges of Touring Post-Covid

Though fans in the U.S. are eager for a tour, Rob was candid about the challenges of touring post-Covid. “Grassroots venues are harder to find, and with promoters being cautious, it’s tough,” he explained. However, he hinted at potential shows in 2025 across cities like Nashville, Los Angeles, and Oregon.

“Leave Tomorrow”—A Song About Change and Freedom

Rob wrapped up the interview by discussing his latest single, Leave Tomorrow. The song is about breaking free from the routines that hold us back. “It’s about getting in the car and just going, seeing new horizons, and realising that sometimes it’s okay to go back home,” he said. Fans have embraced the song’s sense of freedom and possibility, which Rob describes as the ultimate compliment.

With his heartfelt lyrics and storytelling, Rob Wheeler continues to resonate with listeners worldwide, making country music his unique way of connecting with people. As Diana Cavazos Woloszyk put it, “If an artist can make listeners reflect on their own lives, that’s what makes a song a hit.”

Rob’s journey is far from over, and with Leave Tomorrow leading the way, his future looks bright.
