Interview with Liz Michels Ginger and Nuts
Music has always had the power to heal, inspire, and bring people together. For Liz Michels, it has been a guiding force in her life, helping her navigate the challenges of being on the autism spectrum while also shaping her confidence and passion for advocacy.
I first met Lizzie through a mutual love for the British rock band The Struts. As an avid fan myself, I had done several “Pick of the Week” features highlighting the band’s music.
Lizzie’s posts in a Struts fan community caught my attention, particularly when she shared her experiences as an autistic individual on the high-functioning end of the spectrum.
This resonated deeply with me, as my 14-year-old son Adrian is also on the autism spectrum. Our connection quickly grew into a strong friendship, where Lizzie became someone I could turn to for advice and insight about raising a teenager with autism.
Beyond her personal experiences, Lizzie has become a vocal advocate for autism awareness, using social media to educate others about mental health and neurodiversity. Her confidence in front of the camera and her willingness to share her journey have inspired many, including my own son. Despite his doubts about ever reaching her level of confidence, I remind him that self-expression is a journey, one that Lizzie herself has walked with the help of music.
For Lizzie, music has always been a source of comfort and identity. Her father, an avid music lover, played everything from classical composers to classic rock legends like Fleetwood Mac, Elton John, and The Rolling Stones. “When I was a kid, I loved Elton John because of The Lion King soundtrack,” she recalls. “My dad told me, ‘You know, he makes other music too,’ and that’s how I discovered Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and more.”
Her elementary school music teacher, Mrs. Bernstein, further nurtured her love for music, exposing her to classical composers and contemporary hits alike. “She would say, ‘You wouldn’t have The Struts without the pioneers of music.’ She taught me to appreciate all genres.”
Lizzie fondly remembers how music shaped her early school years, from dancing to “Macarena” with classmates to the excitement of hearing Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On played as a reward. “Music was always present, especially when I felt awkward or left out as a teenager,” she says.
As she navigated adolescence, music became a safe space for Lizzie. Like many autistic individuals, she sometimes felt out of place in social settings, but music provided a sense of belonging. “In middle school, I was obsessed with 98 Degrees,” she says. “I even got to meet them when I was in sixth grade, which was amazing because, let’s face it, middle school can be really tough, especially for someone on the spectrum.”
That passion for music has carried into adulthood, with The Struts becoming a particularly significant part of her life. Lead singer Luke Spiller’s flamboyant style and high-energy performances resonate with her deeply. “His confidence is something I admire,” she says.
“Music, especially The Struts’ music, has helped me find my own voice.”
Now, Lizzie uses her platform to educate others about autism, mental health, and the importance of self-acceptance. Through social media videos and personal interactions, she breaks down stereotypes and encourages open conversations about neurodiversity.
Her journey serves as a powerful reminder of how music can uplift and empower individuals, especially those who may feel misunderstood. “Music has always been my safe place,” she says. “And if I can help others by sharing my story, then that’s what I’ll continue to do.”
For many, Lizzie Michels is more than just a music lover—she’s an advocate, an inspiration, and a testament to the transformative power of music in shaping confidence and identity.
