Michael Des Barres’ “20th Century Boy”: A Timeless Classic Reimagined

This week, Ginger and Nuts’ music expert, Diana Cavazos Woloszyk, brought the heat with a soulful glam rock review, spotlighting none other than the legendary Michael Des Barres and his latest single, a cover of the iconic 1970s glam rock anthem, “20th Century Boy.”

“Michael Des Barres is one of the most charismatic, badass, coolest cats that the earth has graced us with,” Diana began, exuding enthusiasm for the artist who has left an indelible mark on rock and roll history. Born on January 24, 1948, in Hull, Sussex, Michael has had a career filled with what Diana describes as “rock and roll blessings.”

Michael’s journey into the limelight began at the tender age of eight, when he attended the Corona Academy Drama School in London. His acting career was quickly set in motion with a role in the classic film To Sir, with Love, starring alongside the legendary Sidney Poitier.

However, it was in 1972 that Michael truly found his calling. He formed the glam rock band Silverhead, which was quickly signed by Deep Purple’s label, Purple Records.

The band recorded two studio albums, cementing Michael’s place in the rock and roll pantheon. 

Fast forward to 1985, when Michael joined The Power Station just days before their iconic Live Aid performance—a moment that Diana reminisced about fondly, recalling how she was “glued to the TV, just being blown away.”

Beyond his musical accomplishments, Michael co-wrote the global hit “Obsession” with Holly Knight, a song made famous by Animotion. 

His success didn’t stop there; he went on to feature in over 100 television shows, including MacGyver, Miami Vice, and WKRP in Cincinnati, and starred in more than 30 movies.
