By Diana Cavazos Woloszyk, Chicago, USA

Rock enthusiasts, brace yourselves! Today’s ‘Single of the Week’ comes from none other than Luke Spiller, the electrifying frontman of The Struts, who has officially stepped into the solo spotlight with his debut release, Love Will Probably Kill Me Before Cigarettes and Wine.

For those unfamiliar with Spiller’s journey, he has been the dynamic force leading The Struts since their formation in Derby, UK, in 2012. Alongside his bandmates Adam Slack, Jed Elliott, and Gethin Davis, The Struts have earned their place among rock’s elite, sharing stages with legends like The Rolling Stones, Foo Fighters, Guns N’ Roses, and The Who. With four albums and 17 singles, they’ve cemented themselves as one of the hardest-working rock bands today.

As a longtime supporter of The Struts since 2016, I have had the privilege of witnessing their electrifying performances 16-18 times, spanning from Cincinnati to their latest Chicago show at the Riviera in 2024. But Spiller’s debut solo effort proves he is ready to shine on his own.

On January 31st, Luke Spiller unleashed his first solo single, and I must admit, my initial reaction to the title was, “Wow, that’s a mouthful!” But the moment I pressed play, any doubts vanished.

The track begins with a slow, mesmerizing build, drawing the listener into its melancholic yet grandiose atmosphere. Then, Spiller’s falsetto soars, accompanied by a sweeping orchestral arrangement that elevates the song to cinematic heights. The fusion of poetic lyricism, classical instrumentation, and a timeless guitar solo makes this song a contender for the next James Bond theme. Spiller’s ability to pour raw emotion into his songwriting creates a deeply resonant experience, one that listeners will undoubtedly connect with.

If this single is just a taste of what’s to come from Spiller’s solo career, then we are in for something truly special. And the journey doesn’t stop here—Spiller will perform at the ninth annual Love Rocks NYC benefit concert on March 6th, alongside a stellar lineup of artists. This event supports God’s Love We Deliver and Project Angel Food, two incredible organisations that provide meals to those in need.

For those eager to follow Spiller’s solo journey and The Struts’ ongoing success, be sure to check them out on all social platforms. If you haven’t already, give Love Will Probably Kill Me Before Cigarettes and Wine a listen—you won’t regret it!
