Poet, Performer, and Proud Parent: Leanne Summers Shares Her Creative Journey

From lullabies to laughter-filled lyrics, Leanne Summers is a creative force of nature. The poet recently sat down with Ginger and Nuts to talk about her life, art, and the unexpected inspirations behind her work, including being dragged into a stream by a dog.

Leanne’s journey into poetry wasn’t planned. “I don’t really know kind of where it started,” she admitted. “I suppose I always liked creative writing at school… and then I forgot about it, to be honest.” But life, as it does, had other ideas. What began as a way of processing personal experiences—writing to help friends through illness, penning lullabies for her daughter, even capturing a dog-walking mishap in verse—soon blossomed into a full creative outlet.

Her collection, Leanne’s Lyrics, now available on Kindle, is a testament to the power of poetry to heal, humour, and connect. “It’s just a book of my poems,” she said modestly. But those poems tell stories full of heart, resilience, and real life.

Poetry isn’t her only passion. Leanne is also a singer and musician, performing both solo and in duos. “I used to be in a funk band,” she said with a laugh, “but now I do more acoustic stuff—just easier to coordinate.” She mostly performs covers, which are more popular with audiences, but she’s written original songs too, including sweet serenades for her six-year-old daughter.

Her go-to instrument? The ukulele. “I love the ukulele. It’s good fun,” she beamed.

As if that weren’t enough, Leanne’s talents stretch to the dance floor as well. Trained in ballet, tap, and modern dance as a child, she now enjoys Latin-inspired dance and continues to keep moving. And yes, she speaks Spanish fluently, thanks to time spent living in Spain—sometimes even writing and singing in the language.

With a life packed with poetry, music, and movement, it’s no wonder Ginger and Nuts called her “multi-talented.” But despite all her achievements, Leanne remains humble and approachable—clearly more about connection than applause.
