Review | Wang Chung Ginger and Nuts
Calling all lovers of neon, shoulder pads, and unforgettable hooks – the 1980s are making a major comeback! Iconic English new wave band Wang Chung is hitting the road as part of the “Abducted by the 80s” tour, and you won’t want to miss it.
Hailing from the vibrant post-punk scene in London, Wang Chung first burst onto the scene in 1980 with their intriguing name – a Chinese term meaning “yellow bell” that refers to the first note in the classical Chinese music scale. But these musical adventurers were anything but traditional.
Over the course of their illustrious 35-year career, Wang Chung has become embedded in the fabric of North American pop culture. Their synth-infused anthems like “Dance Hall Days,” “Everybody Have Fun Tonight,” and “Let’s Go!” have earned them a whopping five top 40 hits in the US. In fact, the infectious “Everybody Wang Chung Tonight” hook from their biggest smash even spawned a new verb – “to Wang Chung” – that’s been referenced everywhere from The Simpsons to Frasier.
Comprising the dynamic duo of Jack Hues and Nick Feldman, Wang Chung’s enduring appeal and impact on the musical landscape is a testament to their distinctive new wave sound and knack for crafting indelible, zeitgeist-defining hits. And now, they’re joining forces with other 80s superstars like Men Without Hats, The Motels, and Naked Eyes to create a musical extravaganza that’s sure to transport you straight back to the neon-soaked, synth-driven decade.
Alright, now let’s get your 80s hit “Dance Hall Days” rockin’ and rollin’ with a fresh new look! This infectious new wave tune has been lighting up the dance floors for decades, and it’s not showing any signs of slowing down.
Back in ’82, the band formerly known as Huang Chung gave us this chart-topping gem, and it quickly became a staple on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Dance Club Songs chart. Fast forward to 1983, and the band (now going by the name of the track itself) re-recorded the track and included it on their studio album Points on the Curve.
But the real magic happened when the music videos hit the scene. One, directed by the legendary Derek Jarman, wove together a collage of home movie-style footage with the band members. The other took a more fantastical, 1940s-inspired approach, following the lead singer as he stumbles upon a long-shuttered dance hall that springs to life in a burst of colour and electrifying performance.
And the fun isn’t over yet! The new remix of this 80s hit is set to be featured in the upcoming Anne Hathaway flick, The Idea of You, so get ready to get your groove on. Trust us; this track is guaranteed to get your feet tapping and your hips shaking – so dust off your dancing shoes and get ready to party like it’s 1983!
