Ginger and Nuts
Ginger and Nuts were thrilled to welcome music critic Diana Cavazos Woloszyk once again as she shared her insights on the latest single from UK-based quintet Deco.
DIANA REVIEW Ginger and Nuts
During their conversation, Diana recounted stumbling upon a TikTok video that caught her attention. The video featured a mashup of two songs, with a mesmerising synth sound that instantly transported her back to the beloved 80s era. The creators behind this nostalgic sound were none other than London-based band Deco.
For those unfamiliar, Deco was formed in 2011 and consisted of members hailing from Staffordshire. More recently, the band has made its home in the vibrant city of London. The band comprises frontman Max Kendall, John Dell on guitar, John Steele on bass, Thomas Reinholds on drums, and Lucy Kendall on saxophone.
Deco’s journey began with the release of their EP, “Real Life,” in 2020. They followed this up with seven singles the previous year, and in 2017, they unveiled their first original single titled “Chances.” However, it was in 2021 that Deco started gaining significant attention after posting a mashup video of Oasis’ “Wonderwall” blended with Bronski Beat’s “Small Town Boy.” This clever creation garnered a jaw-dropping 1.1 million views and quickly went viral, captivating an online audience of two and a half million people within 24 hours.
Not one to rest on their laurels, Deco continued to entertain their fans by sharing numerous fun mashups on TikTok, effortlessly blending the works of Michael Jackson with OutKast, and even Robbie Williams with Simple Minds. Their creative prowess was undeniable.
One of Deco’s original hits, “Rain,” stood out as a standout track, showcasing a vibrant 80s-inspired sound reminiscent of Thomas Dolby. The track’s captivating intro immediately grabs listeners’ attention and seamlessly leads them into an irresistible melody. Deco’s ability to capture the essence of the ’80s sets them apart from the crowd.
2023 proved to be a massively successful year for Deco. Their UK tour sold out quickly, solidifying their popularity, and they also graced the main stage at various festivals. Adding to their achievements, Deco signed with Liverpool-based label Modern Sky, collaborating with Virgin Records.
Fans can expect Deco to embark on a tour next year as they prepare to support the legendary Nile Rodgers with Chic, sharing the stage with the talented Sophie Ellis-Bexta.
Before wrapping up the conversation, Diana couldn’t resist spotlighting Deco’s latest single, “Everybody Wants to Be Somebody Else.” Describing it as a total bop, she applauds the band for paying homage to one of her all-time favourite ’80s acts, Wham! and their charismatic frontman, George Michael.
