Rob, who recently underwent surgery, was in good spirits as he updated listeners on his recovery. “It’s taken a little bit longer than I thought it would, but I’m feeling much better,” he said with a laugh, noting that the dreary British weather has at least given him an excuse to rest.
The conversation quickly turned to Rob’s latest project: a fresh take on his track “Goodbye Summer” from his hit album Leave Tomorrow. The new version, titled the Open Road Mix, will feature on a deluxe edition of the record set for release this December.
“Leave Tomorrow has been my most successful album so far,” Rob explained. “Every time I release a studio record, I like to put together a deluxe archive—demos, behind-the-scenes recordings, alternate mixes. This time, we’ve got all the Nashville recordings, even things captured on phones in the studio. It’s going to feel really raw and real.”
As for why “Goodbye Summer” was chosen as the lead single, Rob said it was all about timing and energy. “The original is quite melancholic, almost sad,” he said. “I wanted to give it more drive—faster tempo, more guitar, more synth, extra backing vocals. The Open Road Mix feels alive, like driving down the freeway with the windows down. It’s a breath of fresh air.”
While the upbeat remix may sound like a love song, Rob revealed a deeper meaning behind the lyrics. “It’s about time, age, and the seasons of life. We all grow older if we’re fortunate enough to. Each season—spring, summer, autumn, winter—has something beautiful, and I wanted to capture that sense of embracing what comes next.”
Fans won’t have long to wait for more new material. In addition to the deluxe album, Rob confirmed he’s planning further singles before the holidays, with a brand-new album titled Hometown due in 2026. “It’s the sequel to Leave Tomorrow,” he said. “Part one was the hero’s journey, going out into the world. Part two is about returning home, realizing there’s no place like it. I’ll be back in Nashville in February to start recording.
Despite another surgery on the horizon early next year, Rob remains upbeat. “Honestly, I could do with the rest—it’s been a crazy year. But I can’t wait to get back into the studio.”
As always, Rob encouraged fans to connect with him online. “I’m active on socials, I always say hello. If you’ve enjoyed the song, just type my name into Google and you’ll find me.”
With that, Rob himself introduced his latest release: “This is Rob Wheeler, who does nothing briefly, with my brand new single—Goodbye Summer.
The single is available worldwide now.
