Join Bagpuss and Friends on their Enchanting Adventures!

Transport yourself back to the golden era of British television as you join Emily and her friends on their enchanting adventures with the “saggy old cloth cat” himself, Bagpuss! Only 13 episodes were ever made, but Bagpuss has remained a beloved favourite throughout the generations. It was voted the all-time favourite children’s program in 1999!

Created by the genius minds of Oliver Postgate and Peter Firmin, the masterminds behind Smallfilms, Bagpuss is just one of their magical creations. From a humble cowshed in Blean, near Canterbury, Smallfilms brought us beloved characters like Pogle’s Wood, The Clangers, Ivor the Engine, and Noggin the Nog.

Did you know that Bagpuss was never meant to be a bright pink cat? It was supposed to be a ginger marmalade cat, but a dyeing mistake turned it pink and cream. And guess what? It turned out to be the best thing that ever happened! Bagpuss’s friend Gabriel the Toad even had a real-life inspiration—a toad that lived in the basement of Firmin’s flat in Twickenham. And Professor Yaffle? He was based on none other than the philosopher Bertrand Russell!

Catch the Magic: Win Your Own Bagpuss Adventure!

Even Thom Yorke of Radiohead knows the magic of Bagpuss! He once said, “I’m telling you, there’s a lot in there. You could do a lot worse than get yourself the DVD of Bagpuss.” Thom Yorke even wanted to name their sixth studio album after Bagpuss, but the band thought it was “too prog” and went with “Hail to the Thief” instead.

In 2007, Postgate and Firmin were jointly presented with the Action for Children’s Arts J.M. Barrie Award “for a lifetime’s achievement in delighting children”. They were also awarded honorary degrees by the University of Kent in 1987. In his speech, Postgate stated that the degree was really intended for Bagpuss, who was subsequently displayed in academic dress.

And so their work was done. Bagpuss gave a big yawn and settled down to sleep.
And, of course, when Bagpuss goes to sleep, all his friends go to sleep, too.

The mice were ornaments on the mouse organ. Gabriel and Madeleine were just dolls.
And Professor Yaffle was a carved, wooden bookend shaped like a woodpecker.
Even Bagpuss himself, once he was asleep, was just an old, saggy cloth cat, Baggy and a bit loose at the seams, but Emily loved him.

Here’s your chance to win your very own copy of Bagpuss! Stay tuned for exciting updates on how you can enter this competition and bring home this cherished piece of animation history.

Remember, with Bagpuss, there’s a little magic in every frame.

The WINNERS were Sheila Delonnette in East Sussex, and Tracy Benson in Leeds.
