Diana Review | Bad English Kat Y (Ginge)

Known for her sharp insights into classic rock and 80s pop, Diana hails John Waite’s vocal prowess and dives into the story behind the track, a timeless example of 80s melodic rock.

In her review, Diana fondly recounts her early fandom for John Waite, dating back to her pre-teen years in the early 80s. A British singer-songwriter from Lancaster, England, John Waite debuted as the frontman for The Babys, a band that struck gold with hits like “Isn’t It Time” and “Every Time I Think of You.” Both songs reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained some of Diana’s favourites.

John’s career ascended in 1984 with his smash solo hit “Missing You,” an anthem of heartache that achieved international success and solidified his place in rock history. “Do you remember that one?” Diana enthuses. “I ain’t missing you at all!” she recalls with a laugh, noting the song’s peak at number one in the U.S. and nine in the U.K. charts.

In 1988, John joined forces with former Babys bandmates Jonathan Cain and Ricky Phillips and Journey’s Neal Schon and Deen Castronovo to form Bad English. The following year, they struck gold with “When I See You Smile,” a number-one hit penned by celebrated songwriter Diane Warren. Reaching the top of the Billboard Hot 100, the song became a defining power ballad of the era, Diana explains, adding that it also charted in the U.K., Canada, and Australia. “‘When I See You Smile’ is quintessential power ballad territory,” she asserts. “It’s a melodic rock classic that has absolutely stood the test of time.”

An ardent supporter of Waite’s career, Diana is particularly taken with his current lineup, featuring Tim Hogan on bass, Brent Woods on guitar, and Alan Childs on drums. Eagerly anticipating Waite’s upcoming show at the Arcada Theatre in St. Charles, Illinois, she notes, “John Waite always delivers a mesmerising rock show. His vocals are as powerful today as they were in his 70s heyday.”

With Waite continuing to tour and connect with fans, Diana encourages everyone to see him live, especially in the U.K., should he return. “He’s an incredible artist and a great guy to chat with. His recent documentary, The Hard Way, gives fans a personal look at his five-decade career. I highly recommend it!”
