Bizarre Supermarket Substitutions

Almost half of the supermarket deliveries have included a substitute item over the past 12 months, according to a survey by Which? – and the substitutions are often pretty bizarre!

Asda customers were hit the hardest, with more than six out of 10 reporting a substitution in their most recent shop – ranging from dog chews instead of chicken breasts to toilet rolls instead of bread rolls.

Aldi customers weren’t far behind, with 59% of customers receiving unexpected items in their orders, including a bag of onions instead of a loaf of bread.

Sainsbury’s shoppers weren’t so lucky either – more than half (52%) reported receiving a substitution, including shoe polish instead of fruit and bacon rather than barbecue-flavoured crisps.

Morrisons shoppers weren’t exempt either, with 51% receiving substitutions such as a meat sausage instead of a veggie burger, and a toothbrush instead of apples.

Tesco shoppers weren’t spared either – 44% reported substitutions such as an Easter egg in place of hotdog rolls and a chocolate Santa instead of a roll of tinfoil.

But it’s the Iceland shopper who really takes the cake – they received strawberries instead of bin bags!

Let us know if you have ever has a bizarre substitution with your online shopping.
