Diana Review – BBMak Ginger and Nuts
Hitting the high notes on their US tour, BBMak proves that they are the epitome of musical harmony. With instantaneously recognizable harmonies that could make anyone burst into song, this dynamic trio has crafted a collection of pop hooks that are perfect for singing along, no matter where or when.
But let’s take a sneak peek into the band’s humble beginnings. Our story unfolds in the North West of England, where destiny played its symphony by bringing together these three musical maestros. Burns, the son of The Signs’ lead guitarist, found solace in his guitar strings at the age of 14. McNally rocked the stage with a band that specialized in Guns ‘N’ Roses covers, while Barry’s passion for bagpipes led him to become the English Solo Player Champion four times over. He even showcases his skills on the penny whistle in two tracks on the album.
A fateful meeting in 1996 saw the birth of BBMak, as these talented musicians discovered a chemistry that was simply unparalleled. Ditching their respective bands, the three took to one another’s bedrooms to create harmonious magic, penning songs that would change the game.
Soon enough, their talent caught the ear of Hollywood Records, propelling BBMak across the Atlantic where they made waves in the US music scene. From Liverpool to Hollywood, their melodies resonated with fans worldwide, selling over an impressive three million albums between 1999 and 2003.
One track that catapulted them into international stardom is their debut single, “Back Here.” Initially released in the UK in 1999, it didn’t make much noise but struck gold across the pond. Climbing to number 13 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in July 2000, BBMak showed the world they were here to stay.
With their debut album, ‘Sooner or Later’, released in spring 2000, BBMak embarked on a whirlwind promotional tour, captivating audiences everywhere they went. The band’s success reached new heights when they took home the prestigious ‘Most Performed Song’ award at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards.
Their star-studded journey continued as they shared the stage with pop icons NSYNC and Britney Spears on their respective tours. Closing out the year with a sold-out 26-date US concert tour and a captivating performance on MTV’s Times Square New Year’s Eve 2001 special, BBMak dared the world not to be mesmerized by their talent.
Not willing to rest on their laurels, they released a UK reissue of “Back Here” in February 2001, rocketing to number 5 on the UK Singles Chart and reigning supreme for a whopping 11 weeks on the US adult contemporary chart. Their influence on the music industry was further solidified when their track “Miss You More” took the spotlight on ‘The Princess Diaries’ soundtrack in 2001.
Proving their versatility, BBmak lent their voices to Disney’s Peter Pan sequel, ‘Return to Never Land’, by covering the enchanting tune “Do You Believe in Magic” in 2002. Unfortunately, as each member ventured into solo careers in 2003, the BBmak era seemingly came to an end, leaving fans yearning for more.
Fast forward to 2018, and the music gods decided it was time to reunite this extraordinary trio, ending a 15-year hiatus. Now, with the release of ‘Painting Lights’, BBmak has reclaimed their rightful place in the spotlight, reminding us why we fell in love with their music in the first place.
So, buckle up and prepare for a melodic ride as BBmak paints a vivid sonic canvas with ‘Painting Lights’. For more information and to soak in all the BBmak goodness, head over to www.bbmak.com.
